Envisioning the Future of Education
By Mark van't Hooft: March/April 2008

Reading this article made me really think about education and children. This article talks about mobile learning, and all of its ups and downs. In my day I had a piece of paper and pencil when it came to mobile learning. Today’s youth has laptops and PDA’s, and many other devices. This way of learning is great, but also can be a little dangerous. Some students might not know the power of technology, and use it in a bad way. If a teacher is going to allow for mobile learning, then he or she must prepare their students on the proper way to go about it. The first thing a teacher should asses is the maturity and responsibility every student posse. Also a teacher must asses the skills each student has. Once these are out of the way, mobile learning can take place.
Does mobile learning take away from classroom learning?
In my observations the answer to this question is still up in the air. Students can gain useful knowledge from learning outside of the classroom, but at the same time learn something that is invalid, or not useful. The world is growing and technological devices are becoming the way of the future. It is inevitable that students of tomorrow will be learning outside of the classroom more then inside.

Does the real world have anything to teach to students, or does the classroom fulfill this need?
I believe that a student of today’s society needs to experience both real life learning, and classroom learning. Today’s world relies too much on personal experiences and real life situations. Students need to be exposed to real world lessons, and how to solve them. The classroom can only take a student so far. The real world will open student’s eyes and make them understand how tough it can really be.

Collaborative Apprenticeship: A New Role for the Technology Coordinator in Teachers' Professional Development.
By Evan M. Glazer and Kathy Page: May, 2006

When reading this article I found many questions swimming around in my head. What I found interesting was some teachers are just too afraid to use technology. I believe fear is our only thing in life that keeps us from doing what we really want to do. The use of computers and other technological tools in the classroom is a great idea. The other great idea is helping teachers achieve this goal. The article did very well in describing the many phases a teacher goes through with technology. The support groups that were described in this article are great tools for teachers to use. I believe every teacher need some help when it comes to technology. The future is now, and teachers need to be prepared for it.

Do perspective teachers need to become technology savvy before they enter the classroom?
My answer to this question would have to be no. Teachers are learning a great deal and have tons of work to do. During their college education they will receive instruction on how to use certain programs and technological tools. I believe once a teacher enters the classroom they will use what they know. It is up to the teacher to begin to learn more and try to utilize it in the classroom.

Can technology make a teacher’s job any easier?
I believe with the use of technology comes an easier way of life. Teachers who use technology in and outside of the classroom will have an easier time. It won’t make their lives simple, but easier to manage. Any teacher will tell you that use computers or other devices made their job run smoother.

Mapping Students Minds
Ariel Owens (2002)

My first impression of this article was a bit sketchy. I had a little doubt about technology and students of such a young grade level. Once I began reading I instantly found a role model in Ariel Owens. She sounds like an awesome teacher, and one that has little or no fear. I myself am becoming a Science teacher, and I found this article to be very inspirational. I would love to incorporate technology and science as one and the same. The field trips and data collecting the children and Mrs. Owens do sound exciting and fun. I have a many reservations of using technology in my classroom. This is just because I am weak and unknowledgeable about technology. Technology and all of its cool educational tools do have many benefits in and outside of the classroom.

Do students benefit from using technological tools in the classroom, or do they just cause more problems?
From reading this article it sounds like these students are benefiting greatly from using computers, and other electronic gadgets. They are problem solving and also working well in groups. I believe technology is something great and beneficial for students and teachers. I hope to some day use computers and other cool gadgets with my students.

Can field trips be beneficial to students, or just a waste of time and money? My answer to this is of course field trips are worth the time and money. Students are able to see real life scenarios. This is a chance for students to learn and receive a different kind of education. An education that steers away from four walls, and pops out from the page of a text book. This is an opportunity I hope every student gets to be part of. Without field trips there would be no Museums, or Aquariums.

Can You Hear Me Know?
Sherry Turkle 5/07/07

The article on technology and human dependence seemed very interesting. I really think people are to involve with their technology tools and gadgets. Too many people out there are tied down to their cell phones, PDA’s, and other multitask devices. I believe too many humans out there are tuned in to their Cyber lives not the real world. The paragraph on kids and adolescents’ using cell phones was a very interesting topic. During my time as an adolescent I was never dependent on a cell phone or any technological device. Kids today have no freedom or dependence from their parents or stupid advertisements. Today’s kids are in a world where you cannot escape and become your own person.

Do technology tools like Cell Phones and Black Berry’s make the lives easier or better for the human race?
I believe cells phones and other devices can make our lives better, but at the same time over use of them can be damaging to anyone’s life. Cell phones and other devices have helped bring love ones closer and made saying good-bye a little easier. In some cases these devices have even saved lives.

Do young children and adolescents’ need cell phones or can they survive without them?
In my own personal experience I never needed a cell phone or technological device. In today’s world there are to many dark streets and bad souls. Kids today need every chance they can to survive. It is up to them to survive in a world in which the darkness has grown. I believe the youth of today need cells phones, so they can be safe and have no worries.

Moderating and Ethics for the Classroom Instructional Blog
Patricia Duebel, Ph.D.

I really enjoyed reading this article about blogs and blog ethics. I found the article to be easy to read and to the point. I hope to use this article for future references and for times of misunderstandings. The author of this article brought out many valid points about blogging and the rules of engagement. The use of blogs in the classroom is becoming a hot topic among many middle school teachers and high school teachers. This article can really answer some tough questions about blogging, and at the same time help teachers decide if they will use blogs in their classroom. Blogging seems like a great tool for teachers to utilize. It is up to them to make it work, and at the same time make it safe for their students to use.

What is the appropriate grade level to introduce blogging and blogging related topics?
I believe the right time to introduce blogging to students would be in the middle school level. In the elementary setting students and teacher should work on introducing and using computers. In the middle school setting students should begin to be introduced to the many applications of the Web 2.0. Using a blog at this stage will help students become more engage in their studies rather then their hormones.

Do blogs really help students’ performance or just mask it even more? This question is still young in its creation, but one that should be better explored. Creating a blog and monitoring it can be an exhausting task for teachers. Blogs can help students get their statement out and be heard; especially the ones that are to shy in the classroom to express it. These same students might also be to shy or intimidated to use a computer, so their performance becomes stagnant and under par. It is a tough job monitoring a class blog, but if done correctly it can be a great tool.

To Cool For School? No Way!
Mishra P., Koehler. M (2009)

The recent article I had to read for my Education 422 class was very interesting, but at the same time falling short of what a teacher really needs to be. The article did touch on some good points about technology and it’s repurposing. This article really talks about the pedagogy of teaching and all that it encompasses. A teacher must really know their stuff when it comes to technology in the classroom. I believe my Education 422 class will help me in my preparation for teaching with technology. It looks like technology is here to stay, so it is about time teachers’ start utilizing it.

Does technology help student learn easier in the classroom, or slow down the process?
Reading this article about teachers and technology made me think. I believe if there is a good knowledgeable teacher that has their handle on technology and all of the cool gadgets, then yes. If the students can learn about different technological early on then it will only benefit them in the long run. Their studies and research will become exciting and fun. Their learning inside and outside of the classroom will become synchronized.

Do teachers need to be educated more on technology and other technology based tools?
Teachers that are not computer savvy or technologically advanced need further training. The classrooms of today are moving forward and becoming technologically advanced. Today’s learning tools are computers, smart boards, and endless others. Teachers need to catch up with the digital age because the static age is long gone.

Social Networking for the K-12 Set.
Jim Klein

The Internet and Students

Reading the recent article about Social Networking in schools was very interesting. I believe the use of technology in schools across the nation is a wonderful idea. Technology in the classroom will open up tons of new ideas and doors for any student. Allowing teachers to integrate technology in the classroom will give them endless opportunities to teach and learn. Allowing students and teachers to Social Network will help expand their communications and knowledge. I believe technology is here to stay, but also here to help and guide both student and teacher.

Does Social Networking belong in schools and classrooms?

After reading this article and spending time in my 422 Technology class, I believe Social Networking is a great tool to be utilized. Schools and Districts that use Social Networking are taking advantage of a great way to communicate with other educators. Teachers are finding that Social Networking is helping their students and themselves. Social Networking is bridging the gap of long distant communication, and allowing for more discussion and a greater opportunity for discovery. Social Networking is the tool of the present for students and teachers.

Should teachers and educators in Elementary schools spend more time teaching students to use computers and other technology devises?

I believe the sooner schools and educators introduce and teach young students about technology, the better. Once a student learns to use a computer their lives and even their education is open up to endless possibilities. It is never too early to start a student on the path of technology. The sooner they learn it the faster they can utilize it in their classrooms. In the end, don’t be afraid of computers. The worst that could happen would be a total meltdown.

Your Google Guide
Johnson, D (2007)

Welcome back everyone to my wonderful blog. This week I would like to discuss an article I read on line. The article can be found on the web site www.iste.org. This article was filled with tons of useful information on Google skills and related applications. What I found really interesting in the article was all the cool applications Google has. I really feel like I have only scratched the surface of Google’s endless possibilities. I admit, I rarely use a question in my Google searches, and I always use just one or two words. I think from now on I will try and use Google’s advance search when doing research. This article is short, but filled with great tips on using Google. Any teacher would keep this in a file for a rainy day.

Is Google or any search engine a proper learning tool in the classroom?

The answer to this question can be debated for years to come. I believe computers and Google search engines are a valuable tool for young and old students. The first step would be to inform and educate any student in the use of a search engine like Google. The more they know the more powerful they can become. Giving students the proper instruction on any search engine will help them steer clear of bad or inappropriate content. Technology for students is a powerful tool that can be used for both good and bad. I believe it is up to the teacher and parents to help the youth of tomorrow become computer ready, but also computer safe.

Does a search engine like Google keep computer users connected to the world or just keep them at a safe distance?

I believe that Google is a wonderful tool that can benefit and enhance anyone’s lives. Google is a great tool that allows anyone to search a question they have trouble finding. Or it can help a lost traveler find his or hers destination. The search engine Google may keep some users at a safe distance, but where is the fun in that. Watching a live stream of a musical concert can be fun, but being there can be a life time experience when actually there. Sometimes going out in the real word can be much more exciting. Rather then being cooped up inside your home surfing the net for lost and forgotten worlds. The computer and Google are great things so don’t be afraid to use them.

Chip Fist blog

My experience with computers is very limited. I have worked with computers for a short period of time. I only use computers to complete school work and talk with friends and family. I have trouble with computers and find that they frustrate me very, very much. For passing the requirements for this course I still am in the dark. I hope to take the CCR over the summer, but so far I have not taken it. I have used computers for classes at San Macros State and have been able to get by just fine. I hope to take the CCR and pass with flying colors. The only worries I have is with the Excel program.

For my educational background, I have worked with San Diego school district. I have been a Teachers assistant and also worked with a program called Everyone a Reader. This program is awesome for students who wish to become teachers. I have done tons of observation hours with my ICP Program. I will be starting my first teaching practicum in the fall 2009. This will be a huge experience for me.

What i expect to get out of Tech 422 is tons of experience. I hope to bring my stress level down with computers. I hope to become more confident with my computer skills and be able to help other with theirs. I hope to work with computers and children at the same time. I need to be able to be calm and experienced. I hope to get the finest direction from my instructor and be able to work well with a computer. This class should make me feel a little more comfortable when working with computers.
